In 2007, Dr. Caroline Gargett discovered that menstrual blood contains multipotent mesenchymal stem cells, collectible non-invasively using a menstrual cup. (Gargett et al., 2007).

Emerging research has shown these cells exhibit strong immunomodulatory properties comparable, and in some respects superior, to traditional MSCs. However, despite its potential, it has remained inaccessible to researchers and clincians with complex donor recruitment processes and lack of standardised culture protocols.
